APPELLATION OF ORIGIN

We understand Appellation of Origin as the name of a geographical region of the country where a product originally comes from. The quality or characteristics of the product are exclusively due to the geographical surroundings.

The Tequila Appellation of Origin is a distinction that guarantees the quality and authenticity of this emblematic Mexican beverage. This distinction represents its history, a legacy produced under certain standards in a differentiated and defined region, which reflects the unique characteristics of Tequila, its people and its strong roots in our land.

THE APPELLATION OF ORIGIN IS PROTECTED AND REGULATED BY NORMS AND LEGISLATION SUCH AS ARTICLE 156 OF THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW, WHICH STATES THE PRECISE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA WHERE TEQUILA CAN BE PRODUCED. THESE AREAS ARE LOCATED IN 181 MUNICIPALITIES DISTRIBUTED IN FIVE MEXICAN STATES: JALISCO, MICHOACÁN, GUANAJUATO, NAYARIT AND TAMAULIPAS; THESE ARE THE ONLY TERRITORIES LEGALLY RECOGNIZED FOR THE PRODUCTION OF TEQUILA.

FACTORS INFLUENCING APPELLATION OF ORIGIN

MAN

Traditions and trades that are transmitted from generation to generation. The hand of man is irreplaceable.

CLIMATE

Mostly temperate climates, with average rainfall.

AGAVE

The Agave tequilana Weber blue variety (blue agave) is the only species allowed for the elaboration of Tequila.

SOIL

Soils of variable textures, with PH 5.5 – 7 for the most part, with average organic matter of 2.5% – 4.9%.

After documenting the conditions to recognize an Appellation of Origin, article 157 of the Intellectual Property Law states that protection of the Appellation of Origin starts with the declaration issued by the corresponding authority. In the case of Tequila, the General Declaration of Protection of the Appellation of Origin “Tequila” was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on December 9, 1974, becoming the first Appellation of Origin of the 18 that currently exist in our country.

THE APPELLATION OF ORIGIN OF TEQUILA WAS ESTABLISHED BECAUSE OF ITS SUITABILITY FOR GROWING BLUE AGAVE, ITS HISTORY AND THE TRADITIONAL PRODUCTION PROCESSES USED TO PRODUCE THE BEVERAGE, IN THE STATES OF JALISCO, NAYARIT, GUANAJUATO, MICHOACÁN AND TAMAULIPAS, WHERE THE CONDITIONS IN TERMS OF GEOGRAPHY, CLIMATE AND SOIL ARE OPTIMAL.

Tequila holds

international intellectual property registrations, which protect the APPELLATION OF ORIGIN.
