Dialogues on sustainability in Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications.

The International Seminar “Advances in Geographical Indications: Latest Trends and Global Challenges,” held within the framework of the 50th Anniversary of the Tequila Appellation of Origin (AOT) and the 30th Anniversary of the Tequila Regulatory Council A.C. (CRT), concluded its two-day program.

Zapopan, Jalisco on April 26, 2024.- With sustainability as its central theme, the second and last day of activities of the International Seminar “Advances in the Matter of Geographical Indications: Latest Trends and Global Challenges”, within the framework of the celebrations of the 50 years of the Appellation of Origin Tequila (AOT) and the 30th Anniversary of the Tequila Regulatory Council A.C. (CRT).

Sustainability as a success factor in Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications, economic and sustainable development, the protection of Appellations of Origin in Latin America and various jurisdictions, were among the topics discussed in panels featuring representatives from the CRT, the French Embassy in Mexico, the Jerez Appellation of Origin, the Organization for an International Network of Geographical Indications (oriGIn), the Scotch Whiskey Association, the Mario Molina Center, Wines from La Rioja, Café de Colombia, Beaufort, Rums from Guatemala, the Spanish Civil Guard, the American Association of Products of Origin, the Kona Coffee Farmers Association, and the Swiss Association of Appellations of Origin, among others.

The two-day seminar featured nine panels, with more than 40 international speakers, aimed at promoting the economic and cultural value of Geographical Indications and Appellations of Origin.

CRT Councilors and Rodolfo González González, President of the Committee for the 50th Anniversary of the DOT and the 30th Anniversary of the CRT, were present at the closing ceremony. Mauricio Soriano Ariza, Head of Public Affairs, Communication, Sustainability, and Responsibility at Pernord Ricard LATAM, presented the concluding remarks. He stated, “The specialists who have gathered here have shared their knowledge, reminding us that Geographical Indications are an essential element in reinforcing sustainability and environmental efforts, which are a fundamental part of the heritage of nations.

Rodolfo González González, President of the Celebrations Committee, concluded the International Seminar. ‘I trust that the knowledge shared today will strengthen the protection and promotion of our Designations of Origin and Geographical Indications,’ he stated. ‘We extend our deepest gratitude to all exhibitors for their time, dedication, and professionalism.

 

At the closing ceremony, the CRT presented awards to José Luis Lapuente, General Director of the Regulatory Council of the Rioja Qualified Appellation of Origin, and to Guglielmo Garagnani, Vice President of Parmigiano Reggiano, and Ricardo Desserti, its General Director, for their support and collaboration. In return, representatives from La Rioja and Parmigiano Reggiano also recognized the work of the Tequila Regulatory Council for its 30 years of service. Appellation

For two days, the Chamber of Commerce also hosted the Exhibition and Tastings of Products with AO and GIs from Mexico and the world. On the second day, attendees enjoyed tastings of Colombian Coffee, Tequila, Ribera del Duero Wine, Beer, Mezcal, and Whiskey, while also visiting the 19 booths to learn more about distinctive products from different regions.
