Zapopan, Jalisco, May 16, 2025. – This May 17, the Tequila Regulatory Council, A.C. (CRT), celebrates 31 years of working to protect, strengthen, and develop tequila through compliance with all the standards applicable to this Appellation of Origin. This has made it one of the most regulated alcoholic beverages in the world and consolidated the Tequila agro-industry as one of the most emblematic and representative of Mexico.

The CRT’s pillars are the Inspection Unit, the Testing Laboratory, and the Certification Body.

“The Tequila Regulatory Council is the technical arm of the Mexican Government for strict regulatory compliance, through permanent on-site inspection, laboratory analysis of each batch of Tequila and the beverages that include it as an ingredient, and certification,” emphasized CRT President Aurelio López Rocha.

This non-profit organization, with clear objectives to safeguard the authenticity and integrity of a beverage that represents the soul of our country, was created in 1994 by Agave and Tequila producers. Since then, it has worked for and on behalf of Mexico’s national beverage par excellence, inspired by European Appellation of Origin models.

Who are the members of the CRT?

CRT brings together all key stakeholders in the Agave-Tequila Production Chain: agave producers, Tequila Producers, bottlers, marketers, and government entities. Representatives of these sectors meet monthly as a Board of Directors to make decisions by consensus.

The objectives of the Tequila Regulatory Council are:

  • To inspect, analyze, and certify compliance with the Official Mexican Tequila Standard and its applicable regulations.
  • To safeguard the Tequila Designation of Origin (DOT), both in Mexico and abroad.
  • To guarantee the authenticity of Tequila to consumers.
  • To generate and provide timely, accurate, and useful information for the production chain and the general public.

National and International Recognition

Endorsed by the General Directorate of Standards of the Ministry of Economy and accredited by the Mexican Accreditation Entity, A.C., the Tequila Regulatory Council works daily to comply with the highest national and international standards, forging agreements with its counterparts in other countries, and exchanging experiences and information to achieve greater protection.

Thirty-one years after its creation, the Tequila Regulatory Council reaffirms its commitment to Mexico, to the agroindustry, and to global consumers: Tequila is an authentic, high-quality product with a cultural, historical, and productive legacy that reflects the work, passion, and roots of more than 100,000 families.
